About
Mill Restoration
After being abandoned for twenty years, the Mill and dam had deteriorated badly. Between 1997 and 1999, generous donations from individuals and the South Nation Conservation Authority assisted to rebuilt the dam, complete major masonry and timber restoration, and install a new roof.
In 2001, the exterior of the Mill took a step back in time to the early 1900s when the loading dock was replicated by Algonquin College students.
Since 1999, the park has been maintained by volunteers. The addition of washrooms and an easy access ramp were made possible by a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
In 2006, the main level interior of the Mill received a new look with the addition of the entrance wall, which clearly displays the purpose of the Spencerville Mill Foundation and creates a natural flow through the exhibits.
Restoration of the turbine, development of the first exhibits in the lower level, and construction of a pavilion in the park were completed in 2007. These projects were finished through the assistance of private donations, the Spencerville & District Winter Festival, the Brockville Community Foundation, a generous community, and volunteers. Also completed in 2007 were the new window panes and the addition of the unique handcrafted arbour in the Mill Park.
In 2015, the Mill Foundation Board, local politicians, and volunteers celebrated the completion of the upper level. It is available for events and public rental.
Our History
After Peleg’s son David purchased the land in 1831, he became the official founder of Spencerville.
